"The notion that such persons are gay of heart and carefree is curiously untrue. They lead, as a matter of fact, an existence of jumpiness and apprehension. They sit on the edge of the chair of Literature. In the house of Life they have the feeling that they have never taken off their overcoats."

The write tool for the job.

My apologies - I've been a little MIA lately, but I had a good reason, I think. That is, if you think this is a good reason:

Sonny Boy (Marcus) graduated from Valencia High School (in Placentia) last Tuesday. For some odd reason, one simple ceremoney consumed my entire week. Go figure.

In the midst of Graduation-Palooza, I did a book club at Raytheon Company and the Huntington Beach Library Author's Luncheon. Both were wonderful. I had a great time, sold a few books, and met some swell folks, including David Rosenfelt. Look him up, he's hysterical.

The nice people at each event gave me presents - wasn't that cool? The Raytheon Book Club gave me this little knitted bookmark:

Isn't he cute? (Note, he has little wire glasses on his little googly eyes.)

As much as I love this cuddly guy, the Huntington Beach Library knows the way to a mystery writer's heart. They gave me this:

(Insert Psycho violins here) SCREE! SCREE! SCREE! SCREE!

The mind of a mystery writer.

Hi, Peeps -

I just wanted to write a quick post to tell you what happened last night. My hubby and I are involved with Grad Night festivities at my son's high school (Valencia in Placentia), so we went to the gym to help decorate. At this stage, decorating consists of painting and glueing and otherwise preparing things to be hung up once we get control of the building.

We're working in the old gym, which has separate, raised alcoves for bleachers on one side and lockers on the other side, divided from the gym floor with metal rails. All the painting, etc. is done on the locker-side, which is unused, and we lock it up each time so no one can come in and mess with our stuff.

So Dale and I walk in, look up to the work area and see three women on their knees, scrubbing the floor. It turns out, Mary had picked up the can of orange paint and given it a shake to mix it. Too bad the top wasn't firmly attached. Paint flew in all directions - she got some good range on it.

Here's the fun part: when I saw them scrubbing my first thought was, I wonder what they did with the body.

I know. Sick, yes?

Dino shoulda covered this

I know, I'm just one of those nauseatingly proud mothers who finds a way for every conversation to revolve around her kid. Well, maybe not, but I have to share this.

My son was a contestant in the Mr. VHS Competition on Friday. "VHS" as in Valencia High School. It's like the Miss America contest, only for boys. They model swimwear, evening wear, do a Q&A and perform some kind of talent. I can't really say Marcus' swimwear or evening wear portions were standouts, but his talent was. Check it out:

Doesn't this seem like the kind of song Dean Martin would have done? I thought so, too, but when I looked it up, it wasn't so. Nat King Cole did the most recognized version. I can't dis Mr. Cole - his vocal was like velvet on this tune.

BTW, my son was 1st runner-up, so if the winner can't fulfill his duties, Marcus will step in. Since the winner's duties are to wear a crown and get his picture taken for the yearbook, I doubt that Marcus will see much action.
