"The notion that such persons are gay of heart and carefree is curiously untrue. They lead, as a matter of fact, an existence of jumpiness and apprehension. They sit on the edge of the chair of Literature. In the house of Life they have the feeling that they have never taken off their overcoats."

For all you mothers

Happy Mother's Day!

In honor of this day, I give you Mildred Pierce, the queen of all self-sacrificing mothers, who gave her all for her sociopathic daughter, Veda. Because, as she told Veda's father, Burt, "Those kids will always come first." I think this is the scene where Veda slaps her and Mildred kicks her darling out of the house. But that doesn't last long...

How many martyred moms does it take to screw in a light bulb? None.
"It's okay, I can sit here in the dark."

Maybe this is the mom we should be toasting today:

"Get the %$!# away from my babies!"

Now that's a mother.

I suspect moms swing between these two extremes, and hope to end up somewhere in the firm but loving middle. I know I do.

To all the moms: I hope you have a great day.

I was able to see a new mom in action last week. I'd forgotten what an incredible, if not spiritual, experience it is to watch a new mommy with her baby. Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

That is a great way to blog, Gayle. To find some one or some thing we admire and toast to them. Thanks for the heads up.

What struck a cord in me about your post, Gayle, was that mothers are human.

But to us, they're angels.
